Overfilled AdBlue tank
An overfilled AdBlue tank has no room for the expansion the system expects, and the surplus vents or backs up through the filler. Clean up the spill with plenty of water and call 01293 248666 if the level sensor is now reading wrong.
The tank is sized with deliberate headroom — AdBlue expands by roughly 7% when it freezes, and the in-tank heater and the level sender both assume a normal fill. Fill past the neck and the surplus either sits in the filler neck and weeps out, or gets pushed out when the fluid warms. The mess is the immediate problem and the level sender reading oddly is the second one. The system itself is rarely harmed.

£89 is the call-out. An AdBlue tank drain and flush is quoted on the phone before a technician travels. If the SCR system needs component replacement — dosing injector, pump, tank or catalyst — that is separate, and you will be told before any work starts. If this is a job we cannot fix at the roadside, we will tell you that on the phone rather than after we arrive.
What to do right now
- Rinse any spill off the paint, the filler recess and anything underneath with plenty of water, before it dries and crystallises.
- Do not siphon it with fuel equipment.
- If the gauge is reading implausibly, call 01293 248666.
What a technician actually does
Surplus removed to the correct level, filler neck and surrounding area cleaned, level sender reading verified and any stored level-sensor fault cleared.
Why this is not the same job as the other direction
This is contamination of the SCR dosing circuit — tank, metering pump, heated lines, dosing injector and potentially the catalyst. It is not the fuel system, and it is not the cheaper job. Anyone quoting a flat drain price for this has not looked at the system.
Common questions
Is an overfilled tank dangerous?
Not in itself. The expansion headroom exists because the fluid expands around 7% on freezing, so a hard overfill in winter is the case worth correcting.
Why is the gauge reading wrong after a top-up?
Level senders on these tanks are not instant, and an overfill can sit in the neck above the sender. Give it a drive cycle; if it stays wrong, it gets checked.
The overflow ran down the back of the car. Does that matter?
Rinse it with water now. Dried urea on alloy, bare metal and chrome is where the real damage is, not on sound paint.
What customers say
4.8 out of 5 from 2,190 Trustpilot reviews. What reviewers mention most is that the technician stayed calm and professional with a driver who was embarrassed and stressed, and that somebody arrived when they said they would.
The most common criticism is price. People do not expect a wrong-fluid job to cost what it costs, and that is a fair complaint to publish rather than bury. The answer is the From just £89 call-out fee, a quote given on the phone before a technician travels, and being told when a job cannot be done at the roadside rather than after somebody has arrived and charged for the visit.
