Contaminated AdBlue

Short answer

Contaminated AdBlue — dirt, dust, a used funnel, an open container — fails the system through the dosing injector rather than dramatically. Drain, flush and refill with fresh ISO 22241 fluid. Call 01293 248666.

The dosing injector sprays a very fine mist through a small orifice at high temperature. That is the whole vulnerability. Insoluble particulate — dust off a forecourt floor, residue in a funnel that has seen fuel or oil, rust from a drum, anything picked up from an open container — goes straight to that orifice. ISO 22241 sets an insolubles limit for exactly this reason, and once fluid has been opened and stored badly it is outside it regardless of how it started.

£89 is the call-out. An AdBlue tank drain and flush is quoted on the phone before a technician travels. If the SCR system needs component replacement — dosing injector, pump, tank or catalyst — that is separate, and you will be told before any work starts. If this is a job we cannot fix at the roadside, we will tell you that on the phone rather than after we arrive.

What to do right now

  1. Stop topping up from the suspect container and set it aside.
  2. Do not filter it through a cloth and reuse it.
  3. Call 01293 248666.

What a technician actually does

Drain, flush, refill from a sealed certified container, injector assessment where the vehicle has run on the contaminated fluid, and code clearing.

Why this is not the same job as the other direction

This is contamination of the SCR dosing circuit — tank, metering pump, heated lines, dosing injector and potentially the catalyst. It is not the fuel system, and it is not the cheaper job. Anyone quoting a flat drain price for this has not looked at the system.

Common questions

What contaminates AdBlue most often?

A shared funnel that has previously seen fuel or oil, and open or part-used containers stored in a workshop. Both are avoidable.

Can contaminated fluid be filtered and reused?

No. Dissolved metal impurity is not removed by a filter, and the insolubles you can see are rarely the whole problem.

How should AdBlue be stored?

Sealed, out of direct sunlight, between roughly −11 °C and 30 °C. It has a finite shelf life and warm storage shortens it.

What customers say

4.8 out of 5 from 2,190 Trustpilot reviews. What reviewers mention most is that the technician stayed calm and professional with a driver who was embarrassed and stressed, and that somebody arrived when they said they would.

The most common criticism is price. People do not expect a wrong-fluid job to cost what it costs, and that is a fair complaint to publish rather than bury. The answer is the From just £89 call-out fee, a quote given on the phone before a technician travels, and being told when a job cannot be done at the roadside rather than after somebody has arrived and charged for the visit.
